A Northern landscape with no palms was the direction requested by the client. Simplistic ease of maintenance was supplemental. The design addressed a simple frontage framed with Live Oaks with a curved drive leading to a zoysia arrival court for guest parking. A traditional inspired wall water feature and trellis provided interest to the arrival court. The arrival court The drive continued through a porte- cochere separating the home from the garage and allowing entrance to the home protected from the weather. The garage entrance opposite from the arrival court created a separate service court area. Facing a very popular area of Naples Bay the rear garden incorporated a pool recessed three feet to provide privacy for the client while using the pool. A walled outdoor bath garden offered the opportunity to bring the landscape into the bathroom environment and add natural light to the interior. Beautiful weeping Japanese yew, and rich evergreen hedging provided privacy along the side property.  A intimate viewing garden for reading and contemplation was tucked into the landscape along the southeast corner shaded b a sculptural Live Oak and oriented for vistas of Naples Bay toward the setting sun. The  landscape was interspersed with small flowering trees such as Hibiscus, Glory Tree, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow  and Gardenia to add color and vitality to the overall landscape. It is truly a classic garden in its purest sense and beautifully compliments the Northern style architecture.

Residence 4

The home facing the Gulf of Mexico was designed by an Architect from South Carolina and was inspired by the “low country” of Coastal South Carolina Plantation style architecture. A meandering tree canopied drive through beautiful gates replicating the early nineteen century era leads one to an arrival court tucked under a bosque of Medjoul Date palms. The home set far back on the property as common to the Plantation era connects to the frontage street via a Royal palm alley’ flanked with rows of spectacular flowering Bougainvillea and surrounded by open lawn and meadows creating a lawn garden setting for special social gatherings so often enjoyed in the South. On a cross axis with the home is a serene pool, cabana bath and guest home structure also open to the open lawn and meadow adding to the social event activities. A service drive, service structure and overseer’s quarters along the northern property boundary provides secluded access to all of the property. A Pigeonaire garden off of the arrival court incorporates a side terrace of tropical plants and a kitchen garden filled with herbs leading the Gulf side of the home. The Pigeonaire houses the complex property security system. The Gulf of Mexico is the commanding  view seen through a forest of Coconut palms and off to the north the garden encompasses a championship quality croquet court used by the local croquet society for tournament play. Access to the Gulf is through a natural setting of created dunes and ornamental grasses providing screening and hidden pathways to the beach. When one meanders through the garden you are taken back in time to the era of the 1800’s and its classical visions. One can almost see full skirts, parasols, top coats and hats.

It is rare for the landscape architect to control and design the architecture. Such opportunity magnifies the potential of merging the two disciplines into one cohesive whole. As an extensive renovation the existing home was preserved as was the swimming pool with the overall concept being the creation of a tropical island paradise. The architecture was designed as island pods where all rooms had fantastic connections with the outdoor, “rooms with a view” and revolved around a central great room integration of living room, game room and bar all with beautiful links to the outdoor gardens  The pool was enhanced with the addition of a cocktail pool, spa, plunge pool and upper level river with stone pads joining the pool with a series of waterfalls. A chickee with an overhanging deck serves as a stage for entertainment as well as a quite peaceful place to relax and enjoy the pool and views of the adjacent lake. A beach setting with graceful coconut palms along with a fire pit terrace provides added “garden rooms” for enjoying a tropical paradise. Side gardens of quiet serenity off each bedroom continues the concept of Island pods”. The master quarter’s secret garden is a special place for contemplation and potting plants a special hobby of the client.

The house is set back from the street and the arrival is understated with a circular drive winding through a grove of live oaks. A intricate gazebo greets you at the drive entrance and leads you through a tropical path across a stone bridge spanning a beautiful koi pond and brings you to the front door. A small guest quarters with its own private garden is off to the left. The sense of place of an remote island is captured in this unique landscape expression.
